Voice Search on Nokia phones

3 November 2009 2 Comments

I recently bought a new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone (detailed review in a couple of days) and was playing around with the same installing apps and found out about a google mobile app by which you can just speak a search term in your phone and it gives you the results, just say “movies” and it will find the movies running in theaters around you, I tried it and it works and it’s a must have app for your Nokia phones.

To give you a better idea how it works and the cool features it has see the video listed below.

It worked fine is my testing I set it to use my location so it was location aware, It did find out the results most of the time, around 70% and I feel if you have a nokia smartphone this is a must have app, you can download this google app via visiting http://m.google.co.in from your mobile phone and installing the same.

Updated info: According to Google Nokia S60 owner can take advantage of the new Google Mobile App, only those running version 3. The app is not yet supported on touch screen phones, which run version 5 of the system software.

BTW after downloading the app it said it’s not compatible with my phone (Nokia 5800 XpressMusic which is S60 ver 5 which is touch screen phone) but I installed it anyways and it worked fine, I did not do exhaustive testing so don’t know if all the features worked, I did notice that on my phone which connects to the internet via Wifi the Wifi connection was on all the time this google app was active, and to shutdown this application you could only do it from within the application, also note that this application relies on data transfer so please setup your internet connection via WiFi, GPRS / Edge etc before your launch this application, do let me know if it works for you on your phone.

Just figured out that I am not able to manually type and search item as the virtual keyboard does not appear on my touch search nokia 5800, I guess hence they say its not compatible, also tired a couple more search term via voice and the accuracy is sort of a mixed bag.

Really I feel that Google Buzz’s release was a little too early, especially with the privacy issues. I also think that Google is going down the same path that Windows experienced around the time of Windows ME. The latest releases and releases appear to be less and less thought out and I feel that rushed to attempt to be a first to market, and compete with a competitors release. The breach of privacy was something that did not require a rocket scientist to figrue out, a very basic review could have identified such issues. Do you think Google may have received too much credit last year?
