Setup and review of Bsnl 3G

24 April 2010 100 Comments

I have bit the bullet and taken a BSNL 3G connection coz the bidding for 3G has just started for private mobile providers and they will be able to provide 3G connections only by the year end around (Oct – Nov 2010) and that a long wait, I have been using the BSNL 3G for the last couple of weeks and the euphoria of broadband in our mobiles is great and really convenient  but the quality of service is kind of a mixed bag.

Apart from the review in this article I would explain you how to setup BSNL 3G connection as well as show you what kind of 3G mobiles you need to get BSNL 3G, before we go ahead the first thing I want to do is to try to explain you a little about mobile networks and what 3G is all about.

If you have ever used mobile internet you might have heard of the terms like GPRS, EDGE etc, well these are the old types of data services on the mobile network known as 2G networks and basically the grading is with the maximum speed that you can achieve, for example in GPRS connection also technically known as 2.5G can get a maximum speed of 114 kbps (but in real world its around 50-60 kbps) in the last couple of years you might have heard of the word EDGE technically this is a 2.75G network which can support maximum data rate of 236 kbps and is much better than GPRS and currently most of the GSM mobile providers in India provide EDGE connectivity for data applications like mobile browsing and for very light usage and email checking EDGE is sufficient, but if you like to browse the net in its full glory the EDGE speeds are just too slow.

Now that you know a bit about 2G networks, the 3G networks (known as third generation) support high speed data services actually 3G is not that fast you might be surprised that technically  3G supports a maximum speed is just 384 kbps,  but a variant of 3G known as 3.5G or HSDPA is faster and theoretically can reach speeds upto 21 Mbps (but mostly cellular networks support the speeds in the range of 3.6 Mbps, 7.2 Mbps)  and fortunately BSNL 3G network supports 3.5G speeds, BSNL 3G has support upto a maximum speed  of 7.2 Mbps but they advertise their 3G speeds upto 3.6 Mbps I don’t know why may be only a few cell towers support 7.2 Mbps 3g speeds.

What do I need to do to get 3G on my cell phone, will any 3G mobile phone work with BSNL 3G?

The first thing is to make sure that you handset supports 3G network, also do note that many older handsets just support basic 3G speeds that is upto 384 kbps for example my old Nokia N80 had 3G support but its only 384kbps, ideally your 3G handset should support 3.5G / HSDPA to fully take the

benefits of  the 3G experience, also many of the Nokia phone have a support for 3.5G only upto 3.6Mbps this includes popular models like 5800 xm, N97, N97 mini it’s high time Nokia started supporting faster HSDPA speeds upto 7.2Mbps to make their phones future proof, on the other hand manufactures like HTC, Sony and Samsung support 3.5G / HSDPA rates of around 7.2 Mbps so if you are planning to buy a new 3G handset do note the speed that is supported by your 3G handset and it should support a speed of at-least 3.6 Mbps as not all 3g phones are equal, the other very important thing is to make sure your phones supports the 3G frequency band of 2100 Mhz that is the one that Bsnl is currently using, which is also supported by most of the European countries, currently most of the 3G phones sold in India support the 3g frequency of 900 / 2100 Mhz so that should not be a problem but if you are purchasing a phone from another country check if the 3G 2100 Mhz frequency is supported also if you want to use video calling make sure you handset also has a front facing camera.

Once you have a proper 3G mobile phone, you would need to get a BSNL 3G sim card, also existing cellone 2g subscribers can upgrade to 3G by calling up customer care and asking for an upgrade, I got a new post-paid 3G connection and it just took me around 20 – 25 minutes to get the same (I was expecting that they would asking me to come the next day to pick up the sim card but I was wrong, bsnl has improved a lot, not only I was given the sim card then and there I was also able to choose a mobile number of my choice from the list provide and the service was activated on the spot) be sure to carry address proof if you have a bsnl tel connection take that bill, identity proof which should have a photo (like election card, driving license) Pan card copy and a passport size photograph, BTW I had to pay just Rs 59 to get a new 3G connection.

How to setup BSNL 3G on your mobile phone?

When you get the 3G sim card from Bsnl, there is no instructions how to get 3G on your mobile, you are left on your own you might be thinking that we should automatically get 3G settings on your phone you are right only a few high end handsets do that but for other 3G phones you need to make a few settings on your phone to enable 3G access.

The first thing you need to do is to go to your phone settings locate the network mode and set it to “Dual Mode”  or “GSM / WCDMA” mode from the earlier “GSM” if you get a 3G, 3.5G or H symbol on your mobile home screen that means you are connected to the 3G network.

Before you can start using 3g you need to setup your accesspoint to do so send a  SMS to 58355 from you Bsnl 3G mobile, the proper settings for bsnl 3g are sent to your mobile you might get 3-4 sms after sending this SMS

The format to send this SMS to 58355 is <Your Mobile model>

For example say you have Nokia 97 the sms to be sent to 58355 would be  Nokia 97 for opening the message the pin code is 1111, open the configuration sms messages and save them, thereafter open your mobile browser and you should be able to  start browsing.

Sometimes these auto settings do not work with some mobile phone, so you need to manually setup the accesspoint on your mobile, use the apn name or acesspoint name as bsnlnet and leave other values as it is you don’t need to enter any  username and password.

So how is the BSNL 3G service

Note: That I have done this testing in the Hyderabad city and the review is based on the same.

The service of BSNL 3G is a mixed bag,  if you don’t get a 3G signal you automatically go back to the old 2G network, thought if you are in the heart of the city you will get the 3G signal but again in my experience over the last month the 3G signal for BSNL mobile is a bit patchy about 20% of the time I automatically get downgraded to 2G “EGDE” network and its hard to get a full signal strength on the 3G network, but a the same location I get the full signal with 2G network from BSNL and other private mobile providers like Airtel, Vodafone and Aircel so the signal strength of BSNL 3G is not that great and if you live in an area where you have patchy 2g service I doubt BSNL 3G will work, it’s best to ask some one who already has a 3G connection to check if the connection is stable in the areas you wish to use this connection.

But when you get the 3g network you can comfortably browse websites check your email it will look like you are on your broadband connection the first day when I got the connection I thought I had switched on my wifi on my phone but only after 20 minutes I realized that I was using 3g so in terms of speeds its decent but don’t expect to stream videos or do mega downloads on the connection coz the connection speeds is no that consistent, the one thing I found interesting is that this connection works even when you are on the move like inside a car, I was able to surf website send emails even while on the move, there are some slowdowns at times but it works most of the time.

In my testing I found that I get an average speeds around 350 – 700 kbps, I did manage to touch 1.8 Mbps only once and one of my friend even managed to touch 4.2 Mbps, but these speeds were achieved during off peak hours.

The BSNL 3G connection works even when you are roaming provided 3G is available in that particular area, the good thing is that the data rates that you pay are the same even when you are roaming.

Call Quality on the 3G network

The other thing that I have noticed is that the cellular call quality is also not that great on the Bsnl 3G network, I almost every time get dropped calls / voice is not clear or get disconnected when I make a normal mobile telephone call when I am on the 3G network, again I get a crystal clear call quality when I switch back to 2G (GSM) network,  as I am using this new 3G connection as my primary mobile phone number I have set my network to 2G and only when I need to access the net I switch to the 3G network this is a bit of a hassle and I hope the 3G network improves over time, also if you are on a call and the network switches from 3G to 2G your call will be disconnected.

What are the data charges can I use it as a replacement to my broadband connection?

BSNL 3G post paid and pre-paid connections are billed at a flat rate of 1 paise for 10 kb of data so it works out to be Rs 1 / MB, if just check your emails and do only a little bit of surfing and your internet usage is limited you can use this as a replacement of your broadband connection but if you are a normal to a heavy net user who likes to watch videos / download stuff from the net this connection would work out to be very very expensive for example if you use download 500 Mb worth of data it would cost you Rs 500.

If you really want to use 3G as your broadband connection you can opt for the BSNL 3G data cards as these data cards have a higher usage limits, but for mobile phones BSNL 3G has only the flat rate of 1 paise 10kb of data which works to Rs 1 / MB there is no data pack for mobile phone 3g plans.

Conclusion

It’s just great that we have 3G service available in India as it has been a very long wait and 3G brings the excitement of  broadband on the move, thought this cannot be used as a replacement for our broadband needs it sure fills the gap , though the BSNL 3G service is not very expensive at the same time for heavy broadband users its not the ideal solution, I just hope the quality of service improves and they launch some good bundled data packages as time goes by.

If you are in India and planning to buy books / mobile / gadgets online, I suggest you have a look at flipkart. It is one of the best online store in India and they offer free home delivery and cash on delivery for most products.

I love BSNL and the services it render First of all, it is a public enterprise and it doesn’t require to cheat us.Individually nothing to earn by cheating and BSNL has got its own shortcomings. Other service providers refast growing with our money only to become thick fat hens.
3G of BSNL is a very good service and wherever it is there, it is getting very good coverage and nice quality. There are many platforms to raise our complaints and there is no hidden agenda.

Hi Sivakumar for 3G data card you can have a look at this link from BSNL http://bsnl.in/service/3G/3G_files/3g_datacard.htm

The good news is that for 3G data cards BSNL has some good data-packages http://www.bsnl.in/service/3G/3G_files/3g.htm I haven’t used them personally but if you are in a area of good 3G reception you should get good results.

Currently I am using HTC Legened with my 3G connection and its work without any issues, earlier I was using Nokia 5800xm phone and that too also worked great.

the HTC Legned suppports a max speed of 7.2Mbps HSDPA whereas the nokia 5800 was HSDPA 3.6 Mbps, BSNL is offically supporting a max of 3.6 Mbps but I have seen some users reporting 6-7 Mbps so I guess some towers are supporting upto 7.2Mbps speeds.

    Cheers,

in india max speed in 3g is 3.6kbps,but even bsnl person do’claim this speed,it doesn’t provide more than 2mbps.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Hi Dr Locanda I think you mean 3.6 Mbps and to clear the issue you will be very lucky if you get consistent 2 Mbps speeds with 3G, expect speeds in the range of 400kbps to around 1 Mbps under normal operations.

I have been using BSNL 3G and even reliance Netconnect + which is similar to 3G and get realistic speeds around the 400 – 600 kpbs which is great on a mobile device according to me and it is the standard speeds realistic worldwide, please understand that 3G is a mobile data service so you will not get a consistent speeds like a wired broadband.

Just wanted to let everyone know a bit about 3G speeds in the real world.

    Hi All,
I want to know the download speeds in BSNL’s 3G
card for wireless broadband in Bangalore (preferably near majestic area). In the website and
their shops they say its upto 3.1 to 7.2 Mbps
depending on the type of modem device and area.
Assume we have a device which supports 3.1 Mbps,
and a good coverage, then what can be the download speed…?
Does it come more than 150 to 200 KBps(for file download) in the worst case? What is the lowest speed and best speed experienced in your respective areas..?

    Thanks in advance.
    Mohammed P

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Mohammed please don’t expect guaranteed speeds like 3.1 or more with 3G as its a wireless connection and the connection speed varies due to number of users, signal strength to name a few parameters.

You should realistically expect around 1 Mbps (100 KB) if you get a good signal in your area, I am in Hyderabad I normally get around 1.2 Mbps but at many times it dips to around 300 kbps it also depends during what time I use the connection.

B.Dey thanks for your comment, give me a day or two to give you the appropriate suggestions, one simple suggestion is that why dont you buy a 3G data card you can get around Rs 2,500 – 3000 and use the same directly on your laptops / PC.

If you plan to use a lot of the 3G connection as your primary broadband connection the data pricing is a lot cheaper for datacards just wanted to let you know.

Technically correct information. A few websites and blogs has.
Right now I am using gprs on china mobile connected to my computer. I get the speed of 1 to 2 Kb/s. My requirement is just 7 to 12 Kb/s.
EDGE might give me that speed.Full 3g handset with HSDPA and HSUPA are expensive
So I am planning to use data card of any make with my current 2G SIM provided they have
    1) EDGE class 10 (better will be class 33 or 12)
    2) Full 3g with HSDPA(7.2 Mbps) (so that I can use 3g service in future)
    3) Should support SIM of other network

Can you please tell me such data card ?

I ‘google’ everyday but couldn’t find one.

    Hey Santosh

I suggest you go for a 3G data card I recommend Huwaei or ZTE but you might need to go to ebay.in coz they are not yet officially available in the retail chain, the data cards upto 3.6 Mbps are a bit cheaper around Rs 1,800 and the 7.2 Mps are between 2,500 – 3,000 on ebay.in

I am myself looking to buy the Huawei E122 HSDPA 3G USB Modem or the E1752 from Huawei, be sure to buy an unlocked version so that you can use any SIM, also its wise to invest in a 7.2 Mbps model data card as I fully expect all private ISP to provide that speed.

    Hi
    Ranjit
I read your article. You have provided good choices to users.
When I was about to buy E122, I was sceptical about upload speed of E122, because they haven’t mentioned it. So I contacted seller on phone. He seems to be very supportive but he himself was not aware of it.that’s the reason I am waiting for your test result of E122.
Though you have mentioned upload speed of E122, still it will worth to wait.
If E122 supports upload speed of 5.76 Mbps only after firmware upgradation (possibly while unlocking) and E1750 natively supports it then it’s interesting to know what caused you to choose E122 over E1750.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Santosh,

Actually all modem that support 2 Mbps Upload have a upload support for 5.6 Mbps I should not have listed the firmware upgrade option I guess it confuses people, BTW both BSNL and DOCOMO 3G support upload speeds upto 2 Mbps max and in my testing with E122 I touched 1.3 Mbps upload.

Regarding E122 over E1750, E122 has external antenna support and I sure that it works fine with Mac OSX apart from Windows, it’s working fine with windows and well as OSX and the built quality is great it exceeded my expectation, the reception of the USB modem was also great without the antenna I got full signal where I used to get 4/5 with my two 3G mobiles.

  • santosh said:

    Hi

I see in your specs that E122 supports voice, but I read in comments that it does not support voice, please throw light.

    Thanks
    Ram

  • Ranjit (author) said:

I am glad Santosh that I was able to help you, do share your speed test when you get your card, as the speed varies a lot from state to state, currently I am in Mumbai (its MTNL 3G not BSNL 3G) on roaming but here in Mumbai the speeds are just average just around .5 mbps.

@Ram if you buy from ebay.in no vat etc regarding voice support on E122 data card I think you need to upgrade the firmware and I haven’t done that so don’t know and I don’t need voice support as I have a mobile for voice calls.

If you think you want voice support choose another data card just to be on the safe side.

    Thanks,

    Hi All,

I am from Bangalore and stay near Majestic area. I too bought a BSNL 3G with a
data card after Diwali. The signal strength in my area is almost 98-100%.

Considering this, I get an average speed of 1.5 – 2 Mbps.

The maximum file download speed which I observed while downloading a file form Oracle website was 360 KBps. Note its KBps and not Kbps with a small ‘b’. So that was truly amazing.

The least speed observed in the same site was 120-140 KBps with a slight fluctuation.

Torrent downloads with 4 file simultaneously, the total bandwith for download nearly reached 390-480 KBps, and upload was 1-1.5 Mbps.

This is truly amazing provided u have sufficient signal in ur respective areas.

The only doubt I have here is whether the 4200 Rs, plan for 6 months is really unlimited or is there any cap on the usage which they call as “Fair Usage Policy”.

    One more question please.
Am using Huawei data card, model no e1752, which I purchased for Rs 3800/= Is this the correct price? Or have I paid more for this ?

Any body who knows about this or who want to know anything about BSNL’s 3G experience can drop me a mail to mohammedbit@gmail.com

I too experienced a similar speed when I used my nokia N73 handset with a 3G sim card.

When I used the same sim in a Huawei data card and connected it my laptop, the speed was amazing. It touches a max download speed of 4.5 Mbps or 570 KBps.

I think the cell phone handsets do not support those speeds for data transer.

And Dhilip were u using the same sim card, i.e 3G sim with the same phone and getting better speeds, in the previous plan ?

If this is the case then there’s something wronng. However as far as I know BSNL wallahs are not capping the speed or anything if they say its an unlimited then its truly unlimited in 3G plans.

    regards,
    Mohammed P.

Yes Mohanmmed using a data card I too have noticed a bit better speeds but the most striking feature I have noticed is that I get almost full signal everywhere with the data card for example in my house were I was getting 3/5 bars on my 3G phone, I get full 5 bars with my E122 huawei data card.

Mohammned I think so Rs 3,800 is on the bit higher side but E1752 card is not that readily available even on ebay.in I am sure these data cards prices will fall a lot in the next 2-4 months when we will have 3G connections by most of the pvt operators.

  • Mohammed said:

    Hi Sachin,

If you feel, unlimited for 3G data services, at the rate of 700/- per month is “bahut costly hai”, why don’t you go for other operators 3G with unlimited………?

In the first place u don’t have unlimited in any operator for 3G service as of now.

Secondly, all other operators tariffs are extremely costly and expensive for 3G when compared to BSNL.

Thirdly, as of now, if you take any other private operator’s service for 3G am sure they will not have network coverage in several cities as BSNL has spread.

  • Mohammed said:

    Hi Guys,

From yesterday, am observing the speeds are reducing drastically. Am just getting 800-1200 Kbps or 0.8-1.2 Mbps hardly.
Is anybody else too experiencing the same………? If yes please reply.

Do you know why is this happening? Is there any usage or speed capping in this BSNL unlimited scheme for 3G…..?

Or is it a network problem with some network device down?
If anyone has any idea about this pls reply to mohammedbit@gmail.com

    Thanks,
    Mohammed P.

Hi Ram regarding the Diwali Unlimited offer it’s truly unlimited, I know some people how download over 3-4 GB/day on the same, these BSNL staff don’t know shit.

Read about the BSNL 3G unlimited (limited time offer) for more info http://www.tech2buzz.com/internet/new-bsnl-3g-unlimited-internet-plan-for-rs-700-month and this offer is valid all over India.

Hiiii, I just would like to say something about the BSNL 3G. I am from Dehradun and here the BSNL 3G is the best to use. The net quality is awsm. I am a heavy downloader and jst 300 Rs it costs me 2 run broadband net for a month. The call quality is better then 2G, msging is delivered to all, cheap data plans and video calls, exciting offers n above all awsm service. And those who r waiting for Airtel 3G, jst chk out the plans for that 3G. U surely would be on the streets. Data plans at 750 for 2GB(EDGE is better then), vid calls at Rs 3/min. So I recommend BSNL if u hv a good ntwrk at ur place.

And I am Using a Macbook Pro Lappy. So plase suugest me a best 3g wifi router and the latest mobile partner software for mac.
i have downloaded one but it looks like it is very old and has very few details .
    so please help me out….
    Thanks in advance…..

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Sam,

The UMG 1831 works with a mac os x but you need to download the mobile partner for mac as it doesn’t come pre-installed with the datacard you might also need to upgrade the firmware, but before doing that just try to load the latest mobile partner software on your mac and use the datacard, I am against the firmware upgrades unless its needed.

You can find the latest ver of mobile partner for mac OS X from http://www.unlocked-dongle.co.uk/Huawei-OS-X/ first remove the old application reboot ur machine and install the new version.

Regarding a 3G wifi router I just did a video for a model that I was testing for a week it works flawlessly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmXSHDnA1Us I will also write a small review here on tech2buzz in a day or two.

    Cheers,

there is no need to worry about the signal dropping to 2g(edge). You just go to connectivity-network-network mode -set it to umts and you will always be provided the 3g coverage. Well speaking about the speed on my nokia n97 using bsnl 3g is a bit frustating. As during day time speed is around 200 kbps but in evening ,it goes worst to 2-8 kbps. Damn sick of this speed but the most afforable mobile broadband is of bsnl whereas airtel 3g has kept its price high.

  • Nilesh said:

when i first pucrchased my bsnl 3g, it offered speed of near 300 kbps but now as i’ve mentioned earlier, it sags down to 2-8 kbps, i think the reason behind this is just the prosperity of bsnl and overloading on the bsnl towers as more and more people are converting to bsnl 3g

  • sam said:

    Dear all,
    Please help me out…………

First of all is there is any disconnection problem in 3g service if we use ne datacard other than Bsnl.
Bcos the bsnl people say that their data card are configured for their sim.
And these pople don’t activate the data plan without buying their data card.
    (Rs. 59 sim + Rs 51 RCV. + 2500 3.1 mbps card)

Secondly I missed the unlimited plan.
So suggest me the best plan available.
I have seen the bsnl ipad unlimited plan @ 999 Rs. For 30 days . Is it possible to get it on existing 3G sim.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hey Sam,

There is nothing like disconnection problems if you use non-bsnl 3G datacards, some times it will disconnect even on BSNL 3G datacard if the signal strength fluctuates.

A unlocked 3G datacard will work fine with BSNL 3G I am personally using the same and I know several other who use it without issues, the advantage with unlocked datacard is that it will work with other 3G providers like Reliance, Airtel, Docomo etc but if you buy a datacard from BSNL it will only work with their SIM you would need to manually try to unlock the datacard which is risky.

BSNL cannot deny you a dataplan for 3G just say that you already have a datacard so just need a new SIM with the datacard plan, also try to get the bsnl ipad plan at the time of recharge by saying you are using it with your ipad.

  • Sam said:

    Dear Ranjit,
    Thanks for the information.
But regarding the ipad plan the bsnl people are issuing micro sim .
And im not aware if the plan will work on data card.
So please tell me what should i do?????

    Help me out..

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Sam then u might need to go with the regular unlimited plan, but wait…. I just got some news that all unlimited plans with BSNL 3G are going to be scrapped very soon, so just don’t invest in 3G thinking that you will get unlimited connections forever.

BSNL 3G is launching some new plans with 15GB and 30GB/month limit.

  • Aryan said:

Hey Ranjit, i want to know about rs. 300 plan of bsnl, i think it is unlimited plan for 1 month net, can u tell me that is it for 3g services. I want to know it in Agra.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Aryan I am pretty sure there is no 3G unlimited plan for Rs 300, there was one for around 300 but it was for 2G EDGE / GPRS.

  • Swapnil said:

Well seems like BSNL is haing a good go with 3g I have clocled @ 4mbps and yesterday @ work @ 2mbps speeds over 3g and that to with only 2 or 3 bars …. SO ye othr than the scams lol BSNL is good…. for now.

  • rohit said:

    hi guys

    latest news

    Bsnl has change it’s plan

now there is no unlimited plan

recharge ur phone with rs 54-100mb
    ” ” ” ” rs 606-1gb day n 5gb night
    ” ” ” ” rs 1102-10gb
    ” ” ” ” rs 1500-15gb validity 30days
    ” ” ” ” rs 3000-35gb ”

hi i am from ludhiana and i have an ipad 32 gb 3g model and i am using the bsnl 3g card for the same but it is not at all fast it is even slower than my wifi ….i expected 3g to be be faster but i was shocked can u suggest something???

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Rohan,

You are mis-informed Rohan 3G cannot be faster than your wired broaband connection that is routed via WiFi, BSNL 3G is in the upgrade process these days so expect realistic speeds around .5 – 1 Mbps but again these speed will not be consistent so if you are trying to do heavy media consumption like watching vidoes etc you will be disappointed.

To get a better idea about wired broadband vs 3G check this article that I wrote a couple of days ago http://www.tech2buzz.com/internet/3g-broadband-or-wired-broadband-internet-connection

Also BSNL 3g these days due to their overloaded network is a lot slow it might improve by next month when the upgrade by Mid April is scheduled to be done http://www.tech2buzz.com/internet/bsnl-3g-speed-test-second-review-and-opinion but again dont mistake that 3G will be faster than wired broadband access.

    Hi all,
I took BSNL 3G 3.6 mbps Data card and SIM from cochin and is using it here in Brookefields,Bangalore. To be honest, it’s not as great as I thought. Speed is very poor most of the time and need to reconnect frequently. It shows 3-4 lines for the signal strength, and says HSDPA/UTMS connectd, yet speed is very poor. So, be careful before you buy it.

Mncair yeah the BSNL3G network is overloaded and the speeds are not consistent now they are even throttling the connections now, see my updated review here http://www.tech2buzz.com/internet/bsnl-3g-speed-test-second-review-and-opinion

Sandesh are you sure you are subscribed to 3G services coz those are gprs speeds also if you need to set your mobile to Dual / UMTS mode to get 3G speeds.

Do check with other if 3G coverage is there in the area you live coz if 3G is not there most of the mobile will revert to GPRS / EDGE service but in your case first confirm if you are subscribed to 3G services.

    Hi,

    Thanks for informative document.

Recently i have purchased Samsung Galaxy S-II Model No. GT-I9100. I have subcribed BSNL 3G connection at Jorhat, Assam. The day it was activated , i was able to see H and 3G logo and was able to browse the internet sites quite fast but it went off the next day. I went to bsnl office, their franchise, Samsung Service center & the samsung dealer from where it was purchased but with no success.

After futile exercises with so many days, i was finally told by samsung people that this model has not been updated in bsnl server and will take one more month.

If that is the case how i could access it for one day. Please send me general setting so i can try setting it manually.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply for my previous comment dated 14-07-2011. Now i am able to access 3g bsnl network after updating my phone Samsung galaxy S-II again on their server. But still whenever i want to make a video call, it says “call has been lost” and does not allow me to make any video call. I have no problem in making voice call though. Is it service provider issue or handset issue?

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hello Mr. Verma,

I am glad that 3G is working fine on our phone, I cannot comment much about video calls coz I haven’t tried it on the Samsung Galaxy II.

Try the Skype application (Download it via market place) as the new version supports Video calls on 3G and it mentions that it works on Samsung Galaxy II.
