iMac my new desktop computer

6 January 2009 2 Comments

Late November 2008 I had done the un-imaginable I have moved to the mac platform as I was just frustrated with my windows experience that I decided to give the mac a try, as some of my friends have a mac and they always rave about the same and it was high time I experienced it myself.

I choose the all in one Apple iMac the 20” model to move the mac platform, don’t get me wrong I am a hard-core windows user and I have been using the windows platform for more than 17 years from the good old DOS days.

Moving to the Mac Platform

To so say the least its nothing short of a revolution and things are not the same as in the PC world, during the first week to 10 days it took me time to get used to the workings of the mac, during the first week I almost thought I had wasted a lot of money by buying an iMac as it had an learning curve (I know you can run Vista or XP on a mac using boot-camp but I did not buy an iMac to run windows) but as the time passed the Mac platform impressed me every day with little things that matter like native PDF support, OS wide Dictionary, Expose, Spaces and Time machine for backup to start with a few things.

After a few weeks of using the Mac I can confidently say that it’s a lot better than the windows world, the mac just works it hardly crashes its a very stable platform, you can multitask effortlessly

without worrying that you might slow down your computer by loading many applications and removing application is as simple as just dragging the same to the trash can, no un-installers or registry entries, Dll’s etc to remove did I mention that the iMac is a very silent machine it hardly makes any noise, the OS X Leopard boots up in around 30 seconds, working with a mac is just a more natural way of working, now I don’t bother about viruses or spyware, my network printers, external hard-disk, cameras etc just work with the mac, most of the times there is no need to install any drivers like you do in the windows world, there are many moments of WOW like a feature in leopard called Quick View where you can view most of the document / excel sheets /  PDF / presentation / pictures / videos etc without even opening it with the Quick View feature, you can also view you documents / folders in the Cover flow mode and OS handles it so effortlessly that you would be amazed, the experience is a bit difficult to put it in words but it’s just amazing.

Talking about the iMac experience it can be divided into two parts first the gorgeous hardware and the next the Mac Operating System called  OS X 10.5 the leopard it would be injustice on my part to talk about the MacOS leopard in this article as it has so many features that it needs a couple of  dedicated articles for the same and I will post about the same in the next couple of weeks, it’s the combination of excellent hardware and the Mac OS that makes the Apple Mac experience so tantalizing and magical and once you get used to the same its so hard to go back to windows world.

The iMac Hardware

The iMac is in a league of its own in terms of its looks and design its a sheer piece of art kudos to apple for the iMac design for the sake of comparison, to a PC.  A PC is like a Hyundai car and the iMac like a BMW just everything about it is in its own league a class apart.

As you can see its entire computer (CPU motherboard) is behind the screen thus you great looking computer and a lot of space is saved and there is hardly any cable clutter. The speakers are integrated in the chin of the iMac and produce decent sound, the entire iMac has just one screw for adding or removing memory.

    Hi Harshit,

I had purchase the 20″ iMac 2.4 Ghz with 1 GB Ram for 55K but now the pricing has changed and the 20″ iMac has 2.66 Ghz processor with 2GB ram for around 64k.

BTW I have recently upgraded from 20″ iMac to 24″ iMac and the 24″ iMac was around 79k.

Pricing from apple store website http://www.apple.co.in/store/flash/imac/imac.html

    Cheers,
    Ranjit
