My experience with 8Mbps Airtel broadband connection
| 8Mbps is the fastest consumer internet connection in India, during this weekend Airtel broadband guys have gone nuts (must be doing some testing) but for the past 2 days I am on 8Mbps connection instead of my regular 2 Mbps plan, so I took this opportunity to test the 8Mbps connection and my reactions are mixed, its fast as promised and if the server supports I was able to reach about 7Mbps (about 850 kb/sec) of speeds which is cool, but the sad part is only a handful of servers supported these speeds. | ![]() |
I tried a lot of servers with video streaming and about 90% of them have capped the speeds to about 2.5 mbps many of our Indian based sites have speeds capped at just 1.5 mbps, I tested
My conclusion is that 8 Mbps connection is great, and its nice to see that we have these high speeds connections available, but these connections are not that practical coz 90% fo the servers aren’t going to support that speed again 8 Mbps connection are priced a lot higher due to there lower data caps which doesn’t make sense, the following are the 8 Mbps plans provided by Airtel again these connections are only available in limited parts of the country, for me I will stick to my current 2 Mbps plan as its more than enough and most of the sites that I visit just don’t provide downloads at the insane speed.
Please do note that the problem is not with the Airtel broadband connection but with the server providers (websites) as they have capped there connections to around 2 – 2.5 mbps so if even your connection is 8Mbps you would get a speed of 2 – 2.5mbps.

who cares man! the 8mbps scheme is trash.. who’se paying that much ?
in delhi, i have to pay 1299 for 4 GB a month!
and that limit could be reached in 1024*4 seconds!
that is 68 minutes
1 hour!! ha ha ha!
and if u want it for browsing purposes only.. then even a 128kb/s connection does fine
Yes you are right coolnhow currently the 8mbps plans are priced very high but it’s nice to have an option for those who would like to have the same.
I personally feel the 512kpbs unlimited plan that airtel offers is a great option you get good speeds and dont have to worry about the data limits.
can u guys tell me wats the scheme for the 512 kbps plan?????
i m currently using 512 kbps from hathway…night unlimited downloads.moreover i would like to check speed of my internet connection….where can i do it????

For airtel currently they have a 512kpbs unlimited data transfer package for 1499 + taxes, you should see this story on broadband that I have written http://www.tech2buzz.com/2007/12/21/the-broadband-scene-in-india/
You can check your broadband speed from http://www.speedtest.net/ or http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Have you tried downloading through P2P?
Ranjit: – Ankit I am sorry, I don’t use P2P so I can’t test the same.
Ranjit which city are you in? Your 2 mbps plan is unlimited or capped? I am on a 1 mpbs plan as Airtel PB does not offer 2 mpbs unlimited and I am reluctant to switch to BSNL.
Roopinder there is no 2 Mbps unlimited plan in airtel only capped data transfer plans with 2mbps, I was using a 2 Mbps plan but now I am on 512kbps unlimited plan, also used the 1 mbps ulimited plan for a month but just could not justify the price.
BSNL broadband also has a 256kbps and 512kbps unlimited plan.
Can anybody plz tell me his/her experience abt Reliance Netconnect USB modem? I m looking forward to have one such connection.
Leave your response!
