Beam Fiber 15 Mbps 1500 plan broadband review

18 May 2011 216 Comments

I have done an detailed review of Beam Fiber / Beam telecom after they recently upgraded the speeds, I have the Rs 1,500 / month plan which earlier used to give speeds of 4 Mbps and now it has been upgraded to 15 Mbps speeds.

UPDATE: I have done a updated review in the video posted below after my upload speeds were fixed.

I would not go in detail about the installation etc as I had already reviewed that about Beam that late last year But Beam Fiber has managed to fix all the speed problems and connectivity issues that I had earlier hence I reevaluate the rating as follows.

Pricing: 10 / 10 (Was never bad but now it’s simply awesome and put’s to shame other Pvt ISP)

Network Quality: 9/10 (Has improved a lot, very low latency so you get good low pings, I tested this connection with a lot of different servers and got great results within India and servers based outside India)

Connection Uptime: 9/10 (have been using Beam for about 4 months now and the connections uptime is pretty good about 2 hrs downtime in a month, had one major outage for about 6-8 hrs they said it was a fiber/cable issue, again I noticed from the emails etc that I got is that Beam service is very good in some areas and not that great in some parts of the city due to frequent cable cutting issues in some areas, they have started to lay under-ground cable to solve the fiber cable cutting issues but it would take time to cover the entire city.)

Customer Support: 6/10 (Improved a bit, but still a long way to go as the support is a bit slow and it takes them time to resolve things).

Overall 8.5/10

DAMN!! that’s fast, hope these kinda fiber speeds come to mumbai also :D

@tomyloveu: Tom you need to understand how the internet works the advertised bandwidth speeds you will only get near you area so In and around India I am getting around 12 – 14 Mbps and getting about 7Mbps odd speeds to US based servers & that is great, With good servers like Apple, MS updates I am getting around 10 -12 Mbps, I work in this internet industry for the last 12 years hence know a bit how the servers are tweaked. I will again update after a few weeks with the upload issue.

  • sahil1105 said:

can u recommend some isp like this in mumbai which provides blazing fast speed and unlimited downloads at very reasonable price, around 2k.

  • tomyloveu said:

@geekyranjit thx ranjit for me its all going over my head… i just want where ever i download speed should be more then 10mbps coz its 15mbps connection… so when i am seeing 4 or 6 mbps i am getting confused thats why i asked whats the avg speed u getting when u downlaod… so i can understand my way whats the avg speed getting… anyways thx for ur reply hope to see with upload speed as well… wait for that and still beam fiber guys dint show up… its been more then week i apply for

  • geekyranjit said:

@tomyloveu: You will not get more than 10 Mbps with all sites, but with most of the big sites you should be able to get for example In gmail today I had a attachment of 9 MB and I was getting it a around 11 Mbps speed, also I did a apple software update about 120 MB in size and I was getting around 11 – 12 Mbps with that…….. the thing is that many sites limit the max bandwidth per user on their sites unless its a download site, I know this coz I managed a lot of servers and we do that often

  • geekyranjit said:

@sahil1105: sorry Sahil have no idea in Mumbai, but again you would need to look at some local ISP’s coz the so called BIG National isp are not offering these kinds of speeds.

    Hi Ranjit,

Awesome review. I am here at Guwahati after returning from my college life and job in Delhi and BSNL is the only provider here and it sucks ass to be frank. :P I am planning to shift to some other city due to the pathetic city due to the broadband LOL. This speed and pricing is like a dream come true. I am not sure it will come to Guwahati in the next 20 years as we do not have even the normal providers like Airtel, Reliance etc. here . But hope such connection makes to Delhi very soon.

I am also a webmaster and to get such a broadband speed I can even shift to Hyderabad. :P Hopefully it would anyways be better than Delhi. The only problem might be language as I dont think many people speak Hindi or English (that is just a perception and I might be wrong though :D ). On checking property prices too, it seems to be cheaper than Delhi and NCR if I plan to shift. :P . Anyways it will be better than Guwahati and Assam I suppose. ;) It is really a dream to have such speed. And 40 GB limit and 4 GB after fair usage is unbelievable for that price. Checked both your reviews and it looks awesome. Hope that it comes to Delhi at least if not in Guwahati. I am hell lot of frustated with the broadband here in Guwahati and it is terrible being a webmaster here who needs consistent and quality connection for doing his work. The broadband goes down every day or so and there are hell lot of problems for an established webmaster like me to use properly. Sorry about the rant but this review and plan for home connection seems almost unbelievable. Even if I had 30% of that in Guwahati then I would have been more than satisfied. And I am paying the same price as your plan if not more and I do not have any other network to keep backup as a webmaster. End of rant. :P

  • Zaman said:

I meant Hyderabad would be better than Guwahati in the above comment. I wrote Delhi by mistake. :P

ranjit did ur upload speed got fixed?

  • geekyranjit said:

@tomyloveu: Nope still like this varying between .5 – 1 Mbps

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Hey Zaman I know your pain being a webmaster….. It’s just beam that is offering these insane speeds other ISP still are stuck at 1 Mbps to 512kbps…… Well I have been in Hyderabad all my life and I only know Hindi & English do not know the local language but did not have any problems till date regarding lang.

I do hope by next year when BWA start rolling in late 2012 things should start changing for good I can only hope it does coz the broadband scene in India just is pathetic.

  • Zaman said:

Thanks Ranjit for understanding my pain. I have been researching on various forums etc. and it seems except Beam Fiber the broadband situation in the rest of India is still pathetic. Does Beam cover the whole of Hyderabad or only definite areas if I plan to shift there in the near future. :P I saw a few reviews about some downtime once in a while in Beam but that is fine with the prices mentioned and a backup can be kept for that price. Great review and a great website. Best of luck buddy. :D

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hey Zaman,

Beam is available in most parts of the Hyderabad city say about 75% of the city is cover most of the populated urban areas are covered but I do not know if they provide services in remote parts of hyderabad, best to contact them via http://www.beamtele.com for more info regarding specific areas.

I do use a secondary backup internet connection just in case but for me beam is pretty good no major downtimes average of around 30 mins or so in a month.

  • geekyranjit said:

@tomyloveu: It is just because big players do not want to do that….. they want to milk out the money for higher speeds…… and the idiotic mindset, high broadband speeds are not that expensive in most of the developed countries……. I just hope bigger ISP’s also wake up and start providing better speeds…….. things should change by next year when BWA wireless broadband starts that should hopefully change a few things.

  • tomyloveu said:

    @geekyranjit i hope so that happen… soon… thx for that info…

@tomyloveu: The Beam support guys arrived today to my house, actually the area manager himself came today very nice gentleman and checked the connection with this own laptop and agreed to the problem with the upload speeds there are going to install a new switch / ONT fiber box in the next 3-4 days so that the upload problems is solved……. will update again once that happens.

  • tomyloveu said:

@geekyranjit thats great news… hope thing will fixed soon…and u do review of it waiting badly for it to see. i too got mad on beam fiber guys today coz they keep saying me they coming to my home and never showed up… its more then 10 days… hope they show up tom…. and if they give me connection first i see is upload speed lol… i update u my part too .. first i am going for same plan as u have… if for month speed is okay and no disconnections i go for 20mbps plan i update u as well

Beam should be given a rating of 1/10! I have applied for a new connection and paid 6 months rental in advance. It has been three weeks and numerous calls to customer support, I still haven’t got the connection. The customer care and technical guys are just dump! How long it would take for beam to provide a new connection in the center of the city? In an ideal case it should not take more than 24hrs. Please, do not take a beam cable internet connection. You will regret for the rest of your life. I am preparing to go ahead and file a complaint in the local police station for cheat and another one in consumer court.

@Vivian if you are in Hyderabad or Secundrabad cites go to http://www.beamtele.com you will see the phone number of there call center or you can also request if via the online form on their site.

BTW just a couple of my friends also wanted new connection and Beam is taking some time due to heavy load with giving new connection, if there is already a distribution line / ONT Box in your building near by area the connection will be given in 2-3 days, but if they need to pull in a new line a delay of 2-3 weeks is to expected.

Before beam i took internet connection from 2 diff service providers, but they were really worst in term of services. The only draw back of beam can be its long waiting time on customer care numbers. 9/10

  • Sameer Sambrani said:

    Hi Guys,

I have recently switched from BSNL home ULD 900 to Beam Fibre 10 Mbps plan. BSNL Sucks. They promised 4 Mbps but I was hardly getting 1 Mbps. I too had some issues initially with Beam. I noticed that somehow everyday the connection used to get drop at night around 11 PM and would not be up till the next day 10 AM. I repeatedly complained about it but to no avail. I finally got frustrated and went directly to their office and yelled at them.

What I got to know was… Beam fibre provides the Internet service via some “Box” and that the “Box” is supposed be always powered on. The box through which my connection came was being powered by some local shop. Obviously at night when the shop was being closed, the connection use to drop out. I asked them to immediately either change the location of the box or my connection.

Within a couple of hours, I got my connection set to some other “Box” and the issue resolved and am enjoying the solid speed of 10 Mbps all the time now (acutal data rate is between 7-8 Mbps while downloading without any download accelerators).

So those of you who are facing issues with connectivity on Sundays or downtimes in the night, make sure that power for the “Box” is not being borrowed by some local shop.

I am a residential customer of Beam Telecom, Bellow are my experiences for the past 1 year.

1)Took 1 month to install a new connection (they promised to give it in 1 week to 10 days)
2)I am ok with speed (1mbps is what I have chosen and I almost get around .8 to .9 mbps
    3)many disconnections, many more outages
    3)CUSTOMER SUPPORT SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS…………………….
4)As per my understanding these call center agents who takes calls are very intelligent people…they create work for themselves by creating extra tickets for the same problem… at one point I had experienced about 15 to 20 tickets been created for connection shifting issues (still getting created new tickets), they will not give change to talk to their manager or any top level management. oh!god, management should be careful in looking after these kinds of activities from these agents, otherwise Beam is going to shutdown soon or later.
5)the accounts department is big mess it seems, no relation between customer support and accounts…
6)finally I am tied with Beam, wanted to go for other service provider with good support

    Finally…This is what Beam is

Sucking customer support, many disconnections, more outages, average speed, a local provider.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Srinivasa Rao from what I have seen the service of Beam depends and differs a lot from area to area for example here now using it for almost 5 months now hardly any downtime and issues but I did have issues earlier but from the time they installed the fiber-line on our apartment terrace a couple of months ago no problems……. do get some downtime coz I think they do maintenance roughly about 1-2 hrs in a month and IMHO that is okay, in the last 3 month their was one big outage for about 6-7 hrs some cable problem according to them.

Also there were just 2 Beam connections in our apartment about 5 months ago now it is 12 most of them at the expense of the so called big PVT ISP and BSNL :)

I know many people who are super happy with Beam coz for now in India no one is even closely offering what beam is doing specially if you are using the 10 Mbps, 15 Mbps or 20 Mbps connections.

The area where Beam is very bad is their call center and support wait 5-10 minutes before any one will answer you can standard answer it would be fixed in 24 hrs…… which can take 2-3 days.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Kumar,

If there is already a line or ports available in your area they should give you the connection in 3-4 days but if they have to pull a new line or install a distribution ONT box they might take a couple of weeks upto 3-4 weeks, but in Banjara Hills there service is very good actually there head office is in Banjar Hills.

However getting a connection as well as follow up customer service is really irritating and annoying. U need to be at their head literally, to get ur work done. The agents who come for installations are too lazy to move their a*#es fast….n take around a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 days for Banjara Hills…But provided u call the customer care number and make sure they have registered ur request. Took us 13 days to ensure that finally our request was registered :P

Speed roxxxxx neverthelss….at 10mbps, downloaded a full movie in 13 minutes flat :D

The customer support tells me that the advertised 15 Mbps is the upload speed and I have to be satisfied with the d/l speeds I am getting. From your video it is evident that the customer support is talking through his hat. I wanted to contacted some one more responsible at Beamtele, though I don’t know how to go about. Is there a way I can get the situation cleared up?

  • Ranjit (author) said:

@Aditya Pratap V: Test your speeds with speedtest.net website Beam phone support guys are just crazy & stupid they will say anything to close the tickets, it’s best to catch your local tech in your area they are much more helpful and will fix things faster.

But do note that the high speeds like 14-15 you will not get with every server, but server in India and speedtest.net you should get your rated speeds.

  • Sagar said:

    Ranjit,

I agree that, the speeds that BEAM tele provides are high with reasonal pricing. But, the service is the worst I have ever seen. As everybody mentioned, when you raise a complaint by calling the customer care, they will take a new request and this happens every time when you call them and want to know your request status, irrespective of the area/geography with Beam tele. I dont understand the concept of raising a new request every time when we call them, and it is so confusing.
Also, It the field staff are completely untrained and unprofessional.
The customer care cannot do any thing other than raising service tickets for your problems which are never solved after the expected resolution time.
It is not the SPEED everybody is looking at these days. It is immediate attention & the service and solution to customer problems.
Because, one day or the other every one will get a problem and then you cannot wait.
After looking at all the posts you have made, It seems like you are closely associated with BEAM. If not, I request you to stop this thread to promote BEAM as it doesn’t deserve to be promoted.

I have very bitter experiences with BEAM and I have seen many suffering with the same issues.

Friends… DONT TRUST BEAM… IT PROVIDES SPEED.. BUT NO SERVICE…

    Thanks,
    Sagar

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Sagar I am no way affiliated with Beam and do not just accuse if you do not know that, You have to be a bit street smart to get things done with Beam……

I have said many times that their support is pathetic and its best to catch hold of the local tech guys they are much better in solving issues also if the ONT Box is not near where you reside you will have a lot of problems, I did have problems initially but eventually they did install ONT box in our building and no problems after that if the service was not good in our apartment they would not have 14 connections, It was just 2 when I took the connection.

I do agree their customer support sucks bad but still they offer the best speeds and I do not know about other areas but in our area the service is very good and I shared my experience.

I applied for beam telecom internet connection and paid the money for 6 months Rs. 3300/- on November 1st, 2011, registered account NO. 276420 and ensured to get connection on November 3, 2011. Inspite of number of calls and emails i have not yet get connection till date and everytime when i am calling customer care different people attending the calls and telling the issue will be solved within 48 hours but no proper action till date.

Everytime, I am getting email from telecom support team that connection will be provisioned by so and so date. I got 6 dates till date, but no executive had came and given connection and everytime it is skipping.

For taking money on the same day they came and collected and ensure connection in 2 days. No phone call has been connected to the higher authority even asking many times and holding line for 15-20 minutes everytime and disconnecting the calls. Same is repeating.

Ticket no. 336463 is open from 5th november 2011 but no action till date.

All of you had faced the same problems. I am not aware of it before otherwise may not applied for the connection until faced the problem.
Can you suggest any concerned or responsible person contact number who resolve the issue.

I know a friend to whom they promised the connect in 3 days but took around 40 days.

It’s best to post about the same on beams official facebook page and still if they do not provide you with the connection threaten them that you will take them to consumer court or ask them to refund your money and that should do the trick.

To all those who want a reliable service..”DO NOT GO WITH BEAM”…YOU WILL REPENT. IT IS GOOD AS LONG AS IT WORKS. IF AND WHEN IT BREAKS..WHICH IS FREQUENT..EVEN GOD CANNOT HELP. Their customer service is pathetic at best…worse than government services. Everytime you call them, they send a message to your mobile with a new ticket number saying “please give us some time”. It has been about 8 weeks now since I raised a request for shifting connection. Their website and service reps say that the SLA is 5-7 business days…Maybe it is 5-7 months…and still counting.

Apart from speed , There are far too many disadvantages
    1. Very Poor Customer Support
    2. No Encryption regarding Switch to Hub ( Any Sniffer can rip apart all social media/IM Networks Packets )
3.Static IP Roflmao No benefit apart from Downloading Movies/Playing online games
    4. Known user would mess up the protocol… Enter number of false passwords respectively ( Yahoo,Google,Msn ) not just your ip would be blocked but people are sharing it ( entire area ) will be doomed .
    5. Easy for Telnet users to exploit.

I do not know how they provide the speed.even though they provide the speed what is the use if they do not support the customers.

Ok. But as of you are saying so this must be better than reliance wired that i have.

Depends upon your area how is the service there, also reliance might work out to be cheaper coz for example reliance thunder plan for 4 Mbps unlimited is around Rs 1,100 for beam their 20 Mbps plans is around Rs 1,650 but after 40 GB FUP hits in beam and it’s a 4 Mbps unlimited connection after that so if you are a heavy user reliance is cheaper.
