Asus RT-N13U Wifi and 3G broadband router review

26 June 2011 203 Comments

I recently had the opportunity of testing the Asus RT-N13U Wifi router apart from the normal WiFi functionality for your broadband connection this router also has support for 3G USB dongles and also has a built in torrent client which can download torrents directly to the router even when your PC is switched off.

The RT-N13U router from Asus is a mid range single band 2.4Ghz WiFi router supports N speeds upto 300 Mbps and offers an impressive package priced around Rs 2,950 – 3,000 apart from offering the normal WiFi router functionality the additional features like using 3G broadband connection via the 3G USB dongle is a huge plus (I tested it with BSNL 3G using Huawei E122 3G dongle and it works great) but do note that for 3G functionality is supported only with the B1 revision (model Asus RT-N13U B1) also by attaching a portable Hard-disk to this router USB 2.0 port you can directly download torrents / files to the router even when your PC is switched off, see my video review listed below for an in-depth review of all the features offered via this router.

Also as this Asus Wifi router support 3G via 3G datacards I have made a video using BSNL 3G with the same.

If you want to use 3G datacards with this Asus WiFi router make sure the model version is B1 i.e RT N13U B1 also make sure you have a compatible 3G datacard here is the list of data cards supported by this Asus RT N13U B1 router.

@indiainspace: Here in Hyderabad you are getting it readily in hardware stores… Online I never checked but just found a lot of listing on ebay india………. if you want a even more power Wifi coverage the N16 is the one but again double the cost and I don’t think it supports USB 3g modem.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hey Manmit,

Most routers have limited power supply so adding a HUB to the USB port of the router will not work due to that…. I do not know about addonics but pogoplug is a good option but I have not personally used them and the iomega wireless station, I personally use the iomega home media network NAS on my network see my review http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE9bxo9yxOg

The iOmega wireless data station connect looks good but see if its priced reasonably in India and I doubt they are available for a reasonable price, I guess getting a new router is the cheaper solution coz the routers that I mentioned in my above post are way better that the router that you are currently using.

    Cheers,
    Ranjit

  • MANMIT said:

yes ranjit sir u r quite right about the pricing…..iomega iconnect is slated at price of 4500rs here….addonics thingy costs 50$ online and i would have to buy 2 so thats roughly the same and on iconnect i will get the proper n router with dual band too….what u think about it?? and yaaa pogoplug doesnot provide services in india,,well thats a shame cause lots of users will want to share files remotely….

    Respected sir,
I am planning to buy tata docomo 3g hsupa e-stick. I need a compatible router so i can share the internet connection with a mobile, a laptop, a ps2 and a pc. Do you think Asus RT-N13U B1 fulfills all my needs?
    Thanks.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Vishal the Assus N13U B1 is a very good router that also supports 3G datacards but I do not know which brand of 3G datacard are supplied with docomo if its huwaei it should work without issues…… if it’s some other brand then you would need to check if that particular model of 3G datacard is supported by the Asus Router, yeah you can share you internet to multiple computer / devices without any issues with the router.

I will also post the 3G setup video of this router in a day or two on my youtube channel ( http://www.youtube.com/geekyranjit ) so subscribe to the same to know about the same.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Sam,

For me the firmware that came with the router was really buggy and not stable even the Wifi range was not that great with the default firmware but when I upgraded the firmware all the problems got fixed.

So yes if you are facing problems / issues upgrade the firmware….. check if your is the B1 version the stick is at the bottom of the router… coz the firmware is a bit different for the B1 model.

    connection is tata docomo
    Can u please help me

    Thx

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Yogesh,

Firstly make sure that the Asus router is the B1 revision as the 3G functionality is only in the B1 model…… some crafty ebay sellers are selling the old model that is non 3G in India, next follow the second video instructions I do not know the APN of tata docomo so ask their support for that and enter in the APN box if they are using a different dial code as for that too and enter in the appropriate fields.

As E177 is not directly in the drop down selection box for a 3G modem select a few modem from the dropdown selection list and test, the auto config did not work for me so try the nearest modem model to yours and check and it should work…… after applying the settings wait for a minute or so and then check, if it still did not work give me more info so that I can help you.

BTW as far as I know and I mentioned earlier did you check the bottom sticker of the router does it say B1 at the end, coz the non B1 models do not support the 3G modems.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hello Pratap,

I do not know if your printer is supported for sharing as it is a dot-matrix printer check the ASUS website for supported printer so to print even with your PC switched off might not be possible…. but to network your PC and Laptop you can use this router with ease, just connect the PC to the router via Ethernet connection (4 ports on the router) and you can use your laptop over Wifi.

  • geekyranjit said:

@Abel7979: Yeah both the computer should work without any issue…… the first thing I would suggest is that do a firmware upgrade coz the firmware that is shipped with the router is really buggy and then try it again……. again make sure to do the firmware upgrade with the proper version see the sticker at the bottom for your model coz RT N13U has a different firmware from RT N13U B1 model.

Hi Mohamned I do not do a lot of torrenting but I tested this router with 2 torrents and I did download them fine….. the only downside to the torrent client is that it installs only on a windows computer so to manage the torrents you need to switch on your computer.

Also there was an updated version of the torrent software and the actual firmware of the router on asus website initially it did not work but after I updated the firmware of the router and downloaded the correct matching version of the software from asus website it worked fine for me during my testing.

    Cheers,

  • Mohamed said:

Sir, am Not clear with your reply.
1.So we cannot download torrent using this router with the system switched off.
    2. My another Question is that if we can download with the computer switched off then” Shall i use a pendrive for Downloading . or we need a External HD.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

    Hi Mohanmend,

Sorry that I was not clear with my earlier reply, You can certainly close your PC / computer and the download will continue on the attached USB device on the router, the only thing is that if you would like add a new torrent or pause the same you would need to open your PC again to use the asus software to control the torrent / download.

You can use the pen-drive or an external HDD, I personally tested it with a 8 GB pen-drive.

Hi Varun it might be the non B1 version if you do not need 3G support you can go but I am surprised that you could get it for such a low price…. coz it is normally price around Rs 2,800 – 3,000 for the RT-N13U B1 version anyways make sure you get bill & warranty.

    Hi Ravi,

When I was doing the torrent testing I tested it on the 2Mbps broadband connection and I was getting about 200 – 210KB on the torrent so was maxing my broadband connection and Yes I attached the pendrive to the routers USB port so the torrent got downloaded directly to the pen drive and yes the PC was closed during this time.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Hi Varun I am glad that you are satisfied with the router indeed its a very good router, in the repeater mode the overall throughput goes down…. for example for WiFi transfer if you are getting around 70mbps throughput normally in the repeater mode it would be come down to around 30-35 mbps but if your internet connection is just 2 mbps it should not matter as the overall throughput is still around 30mbps and that is more than your internet connection speed that is just 2 mbps so you will get your full internet speed.

I hope what I wrote makes sense :)

Hi I am a newbie. I want to buy this RTN13U B1 router. Before buying I want to know
    1. Can i intall media server software like serviio , townky in the router and attach a USB HDD (1TB)to use as NAS?
2.Can I attach a usb hub and attach a 3G dongle& a external powered HDD (WD elements/ Seagate desktop)? Will it work?

Any other router which can support print server, HDD to NAS, 3G dongle, bit torrent, DLNA(UPnP) simultaneously?

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Duraga you cannot install other media-servers or third party software etc directly on the N13U for that you need to remove the stock firmware and load third party firmware like dd-wrt. I strongly do not suggest you to load third-party firmware unless you know what you are doing coz you can brick the same or lose some core functionality.

90% of the things that you mentioned can be done with the stock firmware that you get with this router so use the stock Asus firmware before you want to load third party firmware and sorry I wont be able to provide any help if you load third-party firmware coz I did not test this router with the same.

    Asus RT N56U http://www.tech2buzz.com/internet/asus-rt-n56u-dual-band-wifi-router-review

or the Netgear WNDR 3700 http://www.tech2buzz.com/internet/review-of-netgear-3700-dual-band-wifi-router

Both of which are dual band WiFi routers which officially are DLNA certified do note that 3G datacard functionality is not present with the netgear 3700 model but these are some of the best high end router that you can find in Indian market.

@swapnil the router should not block video call I did not specifically test it with gmail but other video services like skype and ichat and did not face any issues but again my internet connection is very good….. try connecting your computer to the internet directly without the router so that you can rule out the router for the problems.

IMHO 512kbps is okay for basic video chats but upload speed is more important for video chats please make sure what is the upload speed that you are getting go to a site like speedtest.net and check your upload speed to US servers etc to determine the same.

    Cheers,

    HI
thanks for ur advise..but i not getting any uploading speed while using wifi router the speedtest.net show error but it show downloading speed.
BUT when i connect my laptop directly to the internet.then it show both the downloading & uploading speed.
PLZ suggest me how to adjust uploading speed.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Swapnil at time speedtest.net acts funny try on more link http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ select the server as Newyork or Washington.

Also did you update your router to the latest firmware if not do that….. even after doing that it if does not work then you must have got a faulty hardware.

    Dear Ranjet,

I had a Asus RTN13U I want to use it to download torrents via 3G modem I have tested the modem and hdd individually they are working but but when I connect them with IBALL PIANO 423 USB hub it just shows the hdd and 3G modem, HDD was accessible but I was not able to dial the modem.

Now pls suggest me what additional devise I can use with this router to download torrent using a USB 3G Modem and to store the downloads on a usb hdd.

Even you can suggest me a good 3G modem thats comes with LAN connection to feed internet to the existing router.

    Regards
    Sandeep

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Sandeep you cannot use a USB hub with this router it will give problems….. as only 1 device is supposed to work on the USB port and that has to be attached directly so if you are using the 3G datacard then you cannot attach a storage device like HDD.

    Cheers,
    Ranjit

    Dear Ranjit,
I am using my router for LAN and the speeds were excellent but sudennly it got slow i tried ping command (both router and another system) i m getting 25%-50% packet loss. I checked the cables are tight. I did check out the firewall setting and rebooted the router. but still the problem exists pls help me out.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Hello Pratap are you getting packet loss while pinging directly to the routers IP i.e 192.168.1.1 or to any particular website, if you are getting packet loss to even when pinging back to the router then there is a problem with the router else its just a temp problem with your ISP.

I just purchased a RT-N13U Rev.B1 router and have tried to plug at least six things to the USB, like different flash drives and portable hard drives. NONE were recognized or show up in the config interface. Only one Corsair flash drive illuminates like it is reading when plugged but does not show up as recognized in the config interface.

Are the plugged flash drives supposed to be recognized in ALL MODES of this router?

DO you think my router is defective since it will not recognize USB?

  • Pratap said:

    Dear Ranjit,
The problem is even when i was piniging with the router.
    cheers

  • Ranjit (author) said:

@CaptainK Try formatting the disk to FAT32 and try it and even then if it does not work then I guess it’s a faulty router.

@Pratap I think so then you should get it replaced.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Kurian for setting up a router it does not matter which OS you are on just go to the admin control panel via your web-browser http://192.168.1.1 and set it up to work with your internet connection, once that is done there after the internet connection can be accessed irrespective for the OS like Android phone, Windows PC, Mac computers, Linux ipads etc.

Nice review, you made me to blindly select this router :) I have one query, I’m never going to use LAN ports to connect my Laptop as I’ll be only using WiFi on my laptop. So can I assign torrent downloads wirelessly to the router through my Laptop so that the router download’s it even if my laptop is switched off or not at home?

  • geekyranjit said:

@Varad1024: Yes you are exclusively use only WiFi for all the operations even for setting torrents, no need to physically connect any computer via Lan ports and yes the torrents will continue to download even when your laptop is switched off.

    Hi Ranjit,

can you confirm if Asus RT-N13U Wifi router has RJ-11 port? i don’t think it does. i.e. can i plug in BSNL phone cable to this router or do i need a separate modem to connect the Rj-11 and then from the modem i will then connect to this router ?

i think this router suitable for cable broadband ( aka fibre optic ) rather than ADSL.

    hope the question makes sense!

    Thanks

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Faz you will still need your ADSL modem as this router does not have RJ 11 its has a standard WAN port RJ-45 so you just connect your ADSL modem to this router.

please reply i am waiting for your suggestion and thanks in advance.

P.S. can you upload detailed comparison/review on router based torrent clients??

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Dip I do not think so you can find download schedule option in a router torrent client, for that functionality you would have to look at a NAS coz most of the router that offer torrents functionality they just have basic features and interface.

Check NAS from Synology there have some of the best featured NAS.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

For basic and WiFi routing any router including this one will work on both 32 bit or 64 bit OS including any Wifi capable device like android phone etc so as a router yes it work with 64 bit OS and Android phone.

If you are asking about if the torrent download software that is for windows is 64 bit compatible please check with Asus coz I tested it on a 32 bit windows machine personally did not test with 64 bit windows OS.

Can you suggest the option available option for me to make data card wifi.

  • Ranjit (author) said:

@Vidit: The download speed that you will get will depend upon the 3G datacard that you use in the USB port of the router, this Wifi router supports N speeds upto 300 Mbps….. and should easily support datacard of 7.2 Mbps Just make sure the 3G datacard that you select a compatible datacard see the link given above in the article to the asus website for compatible 3G datacards.

After going through this review last month I went with ASUS RT-N13U router. It was easy to set up with my UT300R2U modem. But I’m facing problem with the router.. after using the router for 15mins+ it restarts by itself. It happens every time. What should I do?

  • geekyranjit said:

  • geekyranjit said:

@Varad1024: Are you using a Wired connection to connect after reseting, connect the wired ethernet cable to one of the four ethrenet ports and you should be able to go to 192.168.1.1 page if that does not work it looks like a faulty router RMA the router, also make sure the mode is set to router the small switch at the bottom of the router.

  • waqarhassanpk said:

No how to video still :( I bought this blindly just because you said it would download torrents

  • geekyranjit said:

@waqarhassanpk: I do not have access to this router now, just install the windows download software that you get on the disk and attach a USB pen drive or portable HDD to the routers USB port and just use the software to assign the download or torrent it’s that easy.A couple of hundred users have brought this router after seeing this video and none of them have a problem in setting up torrents its that easy just follow the instructions you might have to download the software from asus website.

  • waqarhassanpk said:

@geekyranjit The problem is, i have the mac, and seeing that you are a mac user i bought the Router since i was thinking you might have a workaround. That download utility is only windows compatible

  • geekyranjit said:

@waqarhassanpk: I did specify clearly in the review that the download utility works just with windows. But I would suggest if you haven’t yet updated the firmware to the latest version do that and give it a try.

still i dont kno what shuld i do i upgraded the firmware
i did everything i culd but didnt really helped me out !!!!!!

  • Ranjit (author) said:

@Vaibhav: Tata Photon+ is a CDMA type service so for that you need to use the CDMA option or something like from the drop down menu do not recall…. and enter your username and password in my testing I used a BSNL 3G SIM with a datacard which is GSM service hence do not require password, for CDMA I am sure you need to enter username / password coz I had long time ago use Reliance Netconnect+ and we had to do that I hope you did that.

Also I do not know if TATA photon+ requires a specific APN you might need to consult with photon support for that and I hope the version of the router you go is the B1 revision coz only that version works with 3G datacards.

But even if you are sure you have done all this then I think so you should consult with Asus and ask for a refund.

    Cheers,

@Rajat: The main difference between RT N13 and N16 is the gigabit ports on N16 and 100 Mbps port on N13 if you are not bothered about gigabit ports you can go with N13 its a good router.

I haven’t reviewed or checked the lexosys routers so cannot comment on the same, for the 3G datacard compatibility please check the manufactures website coz they keep adding new datacards compatible with there devices with new firmwares and it’s impossible for me to check every datacard.

Thanks for some great video reviews. Enjoyed seeing this and the other Asus router review too. Had a couple of questions.

I have 2 Macbook Airs, and an iMac, but also have an old Win XP laptop which is b/g.

So, I read here that using a n router will not help my speeds for the n enabled devices if there are some g devices on the network? True? If so, is there any router which can set up a regular n network, and a separate g ‘guest’ network?

I am currently using a cheapo Belkin b/g router. If I set up the n router as b/g/n, will it at all help in better speeds with n enabled laptops?

Was looking at the Asus RT-N13U

    http://in.asus.com/Networks/Wireless…specifications

The specs say that the USB port on it can be used to connect an external HDD as a FTP server. Not clear on what exactly that means, but can I connect a USB HDD and just use it to copy files from the laptops as a back up?

    Thanks for any help.

I was also little inclined towards Tenda 3G611R+ 3G. But since for E156 I am required to go for 3G150M instead (which I couldn’t find on ekwireless), I’m kinda confused which one to opt for finally.

Kindly show me the right way. Any help is much appreciated !

    Thanks !!

I’m little inclined towards this one as well. This doesn’t seem to support EC156, though. But I have contacted support for the same and now awaiting their reply.

For compatible 3G datacard see the link http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/3gsupport/ if your 3G datacard is not listed and it does not work it will most probably not work with this router and there is nothing that I can do about the same.

FOR SUPPORT ISSUES PLEASE CONTACT ASUS DIRECTLY.

I am closing comments for this article as I believe most of the questions related to this product have already been answered.

ohh i can see in video u still have linksys 54 series….. those are awesome routers and best functioning with DD-RWT wt says?

  • geekyranjit said:

@shrey020: Yes the linksys 54WRT has dd-wrt installed but you are mistaken I installed dd-wrt on quite a few routers and they work great, also dd-wrt is compatible with most asus routers.I am personally using the Netgear 3700 router as my main router these days but for now with stock firmware.

  • shrey020 said:

yes i know i have Buffalo router which provide DD-WRT as there firmware and linksys WRT54G….. which is the cheapest router we and update to DD-WRT and what is your review about tomato firmware?

  • geekyranjit said:

@shrey020: I did not personally test tomato firmware coz with just dd-wrt I got all that I needed…… I have setup repeaters range extenders and I like GUI of dd-wrt

This router turns out to be total crapp to me… Rev b1, firmware 2.0.2.0 – i can’t even touch the options of firmware update without hanging on router. I could’nt upload neither 7.x beta or alternative fimwares (tomato-usb, dd-wtr and so on) the only one i could (thanfully!!!!) was the same 2.0.2.0. Inserting usb pendrive formated in ntfs caused router sloooooowdown in therms of transfers and web panel access..What a piece of sh….

I have a desktop at home with Windows 7 OS and I would like to connect my ipod and Blackberry through Wifi. I have a Reliance Net Connect 2G USB stick. Now, how do I utilize the internet from my desktop (USB Stick) and connect other devices like ipod and BB and start using the internet. Please note that i will be using the dongle / 2G stick – Reliance Net connect and not the LAN connection. Does Asus USB-N13 meet my expectation? Please let me know.

  • geekyranjit said:

@sivakumarj: Yes you should be able to connect your datacard to the USB port of the N13U router and there by giving you internet access, but please check Asus website if you datacard is compatible with the router before purchasing the same coz not all datacards work with the router. BTW on a side note the 2G speeds would be very slow IMHO.

  • sivakumarj said:

Thanks for the prompt reply. I checked the Asus India site and i dont find any 3G / 2G adapter support list. I sent a mail to Asus support, i hope they will reply. Thanks again.

  • shrey020 said:

@sivakumarj you can also do this using any Wifi router, for that you need to share internet dileup(Reliance) with ur LAN and plug the lan cable from ur pc to internet slot of router..

  • sivakumarj said:

@shrey020 Thanks for the revert. Actually i wont be using the LAN connection and i have a Reliance Net Connect 2G stick for which i am checking for a compatible router.

@geekyranjit….hey hi will you please tell me that it will support tikona wireless broadband or not.. and without tikona receiver will it work as repeater on tikona wrls brd..nd pls do reply….

  • geekyranjit said:

@salunketejas: I have never used tikona wireless broadband so cannot comment on the same but if they provide internet via the standard ethernet cable then that should go in the WAN port and technically it should work, best to check with tikona directly.
