Intel Core i5 or i7 processor for gaming

20 July 2011 196 Comments

I have got this question a couple of times regarding which processor to choose from the latest intel Sandy Bridge processors when making a new gaming computer, does it make sense to go with the higher i7 processor or will the i5 be more than enough, continue reading to find out.

i7 vs i5

Both these new Core i (2nd generation, LGA Socket 1155) also know as Sandy Bridge processor from Intel the i5 and i7 are basically quad core processors and if you even look at the clock speeds the i5 processor (2500 model) is clocked at 3.3 Ghz and the i7 processor (2600 model) is clocked

at 3.4 Ghz so in terms of raw clock speed perfromance you are not getting that much from a i7 processor, but one thing that is different is that in an i7 processor is that hyper-threading is enabled so applications that can use hyper-threading see the processor as a 8 core processor instead of 4 cores but again for gaming a i5 processor is more than enough, in-fact for a gaming computer the graphic card plays a more important role than the processor itself as in most of the games the graphic card is the bottle neck for the performance and not the processor so I would suggest for a gaming computer you go for the i5 2500K processor which offers the best bang for your buck and invest the money saved in a better graphic card, see the video I made below for more info.

If you are in India and planning to buy books / mobile / gadgets online, I suggest you have a look at flipkart. It is one of the best online store in India and they offer free home delivery and cash on delivery for most products.

    Hi,
so wht i understand is tht i5 has enough jucie to play games .. and i7(hyper threading) is of no use for me as i am jus gonna play games and facebook.. :P
But my quest doesnt end here.. i want a laptop.. but there arent many options wid an i5 and a kickass graffix card.. max i can find is an i5 wid abt 6 gb ram and 1 gb video ram.. n the same manufacturer will give an i7 wid 12gb ram n 2/3 gb video ram.. I have been checking all .. Alienware.. Dell.. Toshiba.. Asus.. heck even sony.. :P
please help me out if u can.. thanks..!!!

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Hi Sahil buying a gaming laptop is tricky coz they use mobile processors and they are a whole different breed of chips only a few are i7 chips are quad core and other chips are dual-cores but most of them have hyper-threading enabled even some low power i7 are just dual-core so please check the exact chip model number and check what you are getting you certainly do not want those low power i7 chips for gaming laptop if you want 4 cores then I guess i7 is the way again as I mentioned check which mobile chip is in the laptop coz not all i7 mobile chips have 4 cores…. Alienware make good gaming laptops IMHO.

Again for gaming 1 GB RAM Video RAM IMHO is enough and 2 GB is more than enough again go for a powerful mobile graphic chip than looking for the most amount of VRAM on the graphic chip also I do not think more than 8 GB RAM would be required for gaming on a laoptop.

    Cheers,

i have a gtx460 overclocked it myself and a Q8200 2 quad processor with 8gb ddr2 ram and 1tb hard.I’m thinking if I should upgrade to an i5 for a game like battlefield 3. Will it make a much difference than a q8200?

  • geekyranjit said:

@infidel94: To be frank I did not yet check the minimum specs for Battlefield 3 but from the trailers I have seen, this game is going to be a beast and to run BF3 at high settings you would require a modern processor and a powerful graphic card your processor though it’s a quad core the architecture core2 is a bit old now, I think so upgrading to i5 @ 2500K would give you a boost in your gaming.

@geekyranjit thank you for the reply

i buy i5 2500 what do u think how much performance i lose 10% 20% or more then?{i upgrade pc only for games} btw i have still my old graphic card{ nvidia 8600gt} n want to buy nvidia gtx 550ti what do u think about 550ti? thanks

  • geekyranjit said:

@zo0mmax: i5 2500 for gaming is more than enough, I would suggest go for i5 2500K as you can do overclocking if needed in the future……. for graphic chip nvidia 550ti is a okay but is a mid-range chip if you plan to run games at mid-settings its okay, but I doubt you might be able to run the latest games at maxed out at high resolutions with that card also check 560 Ti if the pricing is okay I would say go with that one as those are good mid-range cards.

  • zo0mmax said:

@geekyranjit thank you very much for your time. you right gtx 560ti is very good then 550.i search on gogl bt also a huge price differences.i read some comments in a fourm which thy say when the kepler {new nvidia series they will release in q11 or in early 2012 } the 5series will go down 50%or more the because its a different teachnology… i think i ll go for 560ti a best combination with i5.thanks fr helpful reply. sorry for bad eng

    hi,
ranjit…….actually i got to know about this site via your you-tube video…..was very good…..

if u dont mind plz help me with your expertise in purchasing a laptop…..

my basic purpose would be…..wathing HD movies , high-end games(like COD ops etc), lots of internet, other multimedia stuff…..im not gonna do any video editing or other high project which an engineer do…..

here are my few choices :
    HP – Pavilion dv6-6121TX
    IdeaPad Y570 Laptop – 086228U –
Qosmio X775-Q7270 (gtx-560m 1.5 gb far superior) (so far my first choic but 17.3 isnt too big or not)
    asus g53sw (gtx 460m 1.5gb)

if any other brand or product plz do suggest……..
    budget=50000 to 62000 ….

  • Ranjit (author) said:

Hi Bajrang I do not currently review laptops so cannot help with a specific model etc…

If gaming was not imp then I would have suggested a thin and light laptop with an i5 processor with 4 GB RAM would be more than enough but with gaming a powerful GPU comes into picture.

Look for a model with i5 processor and a good GPU, I do not recommend HP right now look for Dell XPS, Toshiba, Asus and Acer laptop model, for a laptop screen size is a personal preference if you are going to move a lot then the 17″ screen laptop IMHO will be pretty heavy and big so keep that in mind.

The graphic card 560m is a good graphic card and you should be able to play most of the games with that also if you budget is not permitting you even the 460m graphic card is okay for todays games but you might need to keep the details at medium with some up coming games.

    Cheers,
    Ranjit

    thanks ranjit,

ohkiew …so i have decided 15.6, but in dell XPS is over hyped, and i searched the site of ACER “India”(MAx are low end lappys), acer doesn’t provide good range bet 45000-55000, and ASUS not much found in public, now i have been told toshiba qosmio q775 not available in india,

according to my req(confi) and budget HP DV6(AMD 6770m) and lenovo y570(GT 555m) are available and u said u wouldn’t recommend HP ,

plzz suggest if it is ok to buy either of them………which one should i go for, in most areas both are similar , even graphic card tech(both are class 1).

iam not gonna play games on daily basis, but yeah if in case, i should be able to play latest ones no matter high details or low details……

and 1 thing more, in a good high performance entertainment purpose lappy whether i should go for 4 gb ram or more(if it doesn’t enough) and resol 1366×768 or 1920×1080.

    thanks a lot for helping

    bajrang

  • joshxxt said:

@zo0mmax buy the very best possible graphics card you can right now. 580. if you go 570.. get the 2gb version. go stock 560 not ti. not worth it. if you can SLI in the future DO IT. anyhow.. go stock always. not overclocked, superclocked, or the ti. They cause problems down the road and as TI vs stock 560.. literally…5% increase in performance. not worth it. If your mobo doesnt support SLI get at least a 570. preferably 580. Run your games at 1920×1080 or lower for best performance.

  • kevsol2 said:

i7! i7 is better and faster but not a big difference as the i5. i have i5, i recomend starting with the i5 processor and buy the i7 later on :)

  • daxster25 said:

@kevsol2 there is no difference for gaming, i7 is better for multitasking and video editing.

  • geekyranjit said:

@kevsol2: Yep for gaming in particular a i5 chip like 2500 or 2500K is more than enough, a powerful graphic card is more important.

  • dinocelikovic said:

i’m gonna have the i5 2400 for gaming and a sapphire radeon hd 6770 and 4gb ram is it gonna be enough for about next 3-4 years before I need to upgrade something because im on a low budget??

  • xxSymbiotexx said:

    @dinocelikovic 3 – 4 years? Probably not

  • dinocelikovic said:

@xxSymbiotexx no sorry im gonna have an upgrade, im gonna have:intel core i5 2500 3.3 ghzkingston 4gb 1600mhz ram 2x2gigabyte radeon hd 6850 1gb gddr5cooler master cx 650w psuis this anything better?

  • xxSymbiotexx said:

@dinocelikovic hell yes thats better. Might want to get 8 GB of RAM but thats not really for gaming. Just multitasking and video rendering

  • geekyranjit said:

@dinocelikovic: Okay mid-range config for gaming, yeah but as suggested by xxSymbiotexx go for 8 GB Ram its really cheap these days and you will be able to multitask a lot better again if you are going with 8 GB Ram then go with Windows 7 64 bit.

  • dinocelikovic said:

@geekyranjit i cant go with 8gb because im on a tight budget and the difference in price between 4gb and 8 gb is about $40 and im already gonna have windows 7 ultimate 64-bit!! :D

  • geekyranjit said:

@dinocelikovic: Oh I see… not a problem coz 4 GB is pretty good and if you want to upgrade RAM on a later stage you can do that upgrading RAM is one of the easiest thing we can do……. BTW RAM is expensive where you live here we can get 8 GB 1333Mhz DDR3 (2 x 4GB) for about $55 – 60.

i7 for heavy gaming, but i5 for lighter games. Heavy games: battlefield, Crysis, B Ops, MW3 lighter games, PvZ, Minecraft, WoW, MW2, COD4

  • geekyranjit said:

@SmileeDude23: Even latest heavy games like BF3, Crysis 2 / COD4 / MW3 the i5 it’s more than enough……. so essentially you do not need the i7, I wont argue you can see CPU benchmarks for that it’s better to put that extra money for a beefed up graphic card especially for games like BF3 where you want all the eye candy.

  • Warmonger1337 said:

The i5 2500k spanks the i7 2600k, no games support hyperthreading. So if your building a gaming rig the i5 2500k is better. It also bench’s better then the 2600k in some games. So save $100 and get the BETTER chip. Spend the $100 and get a 6970 or something and start running games maxed out.

  • Amuffin456 said:

@Warmonger1337 Only for gaming, however the 2600k destroys the 2500k in anything that is multi threaded.

  • geekyranjit said:

@Amuffin456: Yep I agree, if you work with video and do editing stuff the i7 2600K is a better chip but for just gaming the i5 2500K is more than enough.

  • Amuffin456 said:

@xXlccporXx i5-2500, unfortuenatly these chips can only be pushed up to 4.1ghz

  • Warmonger1337 said:

@Amuffin456 That is true, but who does CPU intensive tasks on home computers anymore? The only reason to get a i7 is if your a huge photoshop or video editing/rendering person. Other then that its a waste of money.

  • rollingcube said:

can you explain exactly what these processors are, what they do and how? Just sort of simply as possible so I can find out just what they are and why they are so good. Thanks.

  • Amuffin456 said:

@Warmonger1337 Which is stuff I like to do apparently :P hyperthreading is great

  • Amuffin456 said:

@rollingcube i5-2500k has 4c/4t and the i7-2600k has 4c/8t. Right now just wait until september where ivybridge will come out.

  • Amuffin456 said:

@xXlccporXx What do you mean? K chips can be pushed up to 5+ghz

  • geekyranjit said:

@Amuffin456: K at the end of these intel chips simply means that you can overclock the chip, non K version of the chip run at the stock frequency.

  • Amuffin456 said:

@geekyranjit non version of the k chip can be pushed up to 4.1ghz.

  • geekyranjit said:

@Amuffin456: Yep they are like semi-unlocked processors the multiplyer can ben increase a little bit from the stocks and also change the BCLK so you can go around 4 Ghz, I could not personally test the same coz I processors that I have are all the K versions.

  • geekyranjit said:

@TheArunsaru: Actually you can overclock this processor a little again it will also depend upon the motherboard that you are using,The motherboard that can support overclocking are the P67 & Z68 for sandy bridge processors.

  • AvAThinkClear said:

  • Gaffer213 said:

@geekyranjit what do u think of the new prossesor?

@Gaffer213: By new do you mean the Sandybridge E processors based on socket 2011 ???

  • Gaffer213 said:

    @geekyranjit yes

  • geekyranjit said:

@geekyranjit: For gaming you do not require those 6 core E processors but if you are heavily in 3D modeling or video production then those processors can help do note the E processors is pretty expensive about $990

Anyways, 2 days ago i swtiched to i5 2400 and performance in ALL games jumped sky high! Every game that had a FPS drop anywhere now runs 60+fps steady!

I would not upgrade now since Ivy Bridge is coming this summer.Same goes for new 3d cards coming out. nVidia summer 2012 and ATI jan feb 2012.For gaming the clock speed is still the most important part in regards to CPUs.Another thing that is important in regards to the future is the console marked. Both Xbox360 and the PS3 will still be the top end consoles for 2012. So you wont see a huge tech leap in most AAA PC games ether, with a few exemptions. If you have a decent rig now, wait.

  • Crux315 said:

@longmage4 The i7-2600k only has four-cores. The question arises due to the hyper-threading feature of the i7 which is not available on the i5. And no, you’d want to purchase the i5 because games do not take advantage of the hyperthreading.

@debayanbasu11: If you going to play the latest 3D games the internal integrated graphic chip on these Sandybridge chips like i5 / i7 is no good its just good enough for basic games and desktop functionality but if you are going to play the 3D games then you need the dedicated graphic card GPU.

Good video. I like that you don’t have any annoying edits. The jump cuts in most videos can get annoying. This video had a lot of information in one, natural take.

@solidsnake2164 I have an I7 740 qm (laptop) at 1.7 ghz and I rarely get over. 36% CPU usage in Bf3 but also I’m running all low and 720 by 480

  • gmk120 said:

got a clarkdale (or however is written..) I5 3,2 GHz 650, and i have never had problems with it, now running it along with a GTX 560 and i can max out almost all the games

  • buzz9961 said:

but what about the future?maybe games will support hyper threading and use more mb cache

  • wwecyprusguy said:

Hello everyone. I play world of warcraft and i want to buy a processor that can get more than 70 fps. With the i7 how many fps will i be able to get?

  • geekyranjit said:

@wwecyprusguy: as mentioned in the video a i5 is more than enough get a good graphic card like Nvidia 560 or ATI Radeon 6870 a powerful graphic card is more important than the processor for good fps in gaming.

  • wwecyprusguy said:

@geekyranjit Alright man thanks for respoding to my question i subbed keep up the good work ^^

  • imissmynut said:

What would i just for my computer i am building? I am not and extreme gamer but i have games like: minecraft, spore, tropica 4, sims, xplanes. would would i go for i3 processor and nvidia 550?

  • geekyranjit said:

@imissmynut: Yep i3 with Nvidia 550 would be great combo for light gaming.

  • buzz9961 said:

what do you say about taking an i3 and upgrade later to i7?

  • geekyranjit said:

@buzz9961: Yes that can be done.

  • MrKaisyj said:

Actualy the only big diffrence betwen i5 and i7 seven is hyper threading that is the feature that i7 has and i5 doesnt but, for gaming that is not usable it just makes more heat and therefore less overclock ablity:D If u video editing then i7 is beast:D

  • Surtak said:

I am SO SORRY for this….but I burst out laughing at the absolutely perfect situation of an Indian basically giving out Tech Support. It was too brilliant, so sorry :( On the actual content I’d say, very good advice. I’d only recommend the i7 for really very processor-heavy software.

  • footballelmaestro123 said:

@geekyranjit in the future will hyper-threading make a difference?

  • guru00005 said:

wht crap u trying to say tht processor does nt make a difference .,. :O any day core i7 .,.,..

  • mrDakiller101 said:

@reaper57abvbg saving up for the 6970 or 6950

  • geekyranjit said:

@guru00005: I am talking about desktop processors here and with a i7 vs i5 you are not going to get much performance increase in gaming…… better to invest that money in a better faster GPU coz that’s the most imp thing for a gaming rig…. essentially the current crop of i5 are just i7 but just hyper-threading is disabled…. also any current game will not take advantage of more than 4 cores.

  • muneshable said:

    1:56 until 1:158″butter upgrade”

    what about i7 2670qm

  • Darkmanskin said:

    Rupees? LOL How about USD

  • geekyranjit said:

@Darkmanskin: divide the Rupess amount by 50 to get the $ dollar approx.

  • Darkmanskin said:

    @geekyranjit Thnaks…. Can I use 16Gb RAM with an i5 CPU?. I will be using Z68.

  • geekyranjit said:

@Darkmanskin: Yeah sure you can use 16 GB RAM with i5 most of the Z68 based boards support upto 32 GB RAM.

  • Darkmanskin said:

    @geekyranjit Thanks.

  • gdialpha said:

@geekyranjit for gaming cant u just use a i3 cpu i mean for a budget build using intel cpu

  • violatorx7 said:

@Darkmanskin Why would you need 16 gigs of RAM o_0 … in my opinion difference between 4 gigs on 32-bit OS and 12 gigs on 64-bit OS is minimal (isn’t worth the money). And I think the 64-bit OS is shittier :D but that’s just my opinion =3

  • Darkmanskin said:

@violatorx7 so I can open 1,000,000 tabs at ones. LOL Naw, I got them for a good price on New Egg. They where just under $100USD

  • Darkmanskin said:

@violatorx7 Why do I need a mother board that can max out at 32GB? Why do I need four monitors. Just cause.

  • Darkmanskin said:

@violatorx7 Why do people buy cars that can do 200 MPH and will never drive it that fast. Why do I wear a tie? Ties are useless if you ask me. Why do I have a kitchen table and always eat at my desk? Why do I have two cats? Why do I live in the Bronx?

  • footballelmaestro123 said:

    @Darkmanskin LOL

  • dustin15b said:

i agree there is no point in spending the money on the i7, that money is better spent on the graphics card a prime example is my rig i5 2500k, 16GB 1600mhz RAM, Radeon 6850 2GB 256-bit gfx card, Z68 board. my friends is an i7 2700k, same RAM, Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit, same board and we benchmark at right around the same FPS (im talking a 1-3 fps difference) i saved alot more money on my rig then he did (230usd for i5 370usd for i7)

  • 97221135 said:

LoL ? Why Must People Need Intel Core i5 Or i7 , When Intel Dual Core E5700 Can Play StarCraft 2 And Battle Field 3 With ATI Radeon HD 5850 .

  • geekyranjit said:

@IIxBLAZziiN69x: Yes a very good combination will be able to play any game you throw at the same but remember with that processor model you will not be able to do much over-clocking with the same.
