Hands On HCL Mileap Y Series tablet UMPC

CD and Manuals

Manuals, Warrant Card, Carry case, HCL aslo provided the Windows Vista Home Premium CD, Microsoft Works CD, a CD Contaning UMPC drivers and Kaspersky Anti-Virus, though you don’t need the CD’s coz Vista is already preloaded on the Laptop.

Mileap Vista Initialization

The first screens after the boot up when Vista is basically initializing after a few moments it will ask you for a username and password set it up and you are ready to go!

Mileap Vista running

Running Vista after all the initial setup was over, I disabled the Vista Sidebar as it takes up too much space in my opinion on the small screen, first impressions the screen is ultra sharp and is a pleasure to work on, Initially I found the fonts etc to be a bit smudgy after a few minutes I found the default installation had set the resolution to 800×600 I had to change the screen resolution from 800×600 to 1024×600 and it was beautiful to work on this resolution.

Mileap size compare

You can get an idea about how small it is, behind the HCL Mileap laptop is my 22 inch LCD monitor, have to say though the screen look tiny its ultra sharp and very bright!

Mileap size compare to a normal 14 inch laptop

When sitting beside my HP 14 inch Laptop!

Did not work a lot on the same coz Windows Vista’s Updates were being installed all the time and due to the same it was a bit slow, It had Kaspersky antivirus suite installed and even after

a couple reboots the hard-disk would grind continuously I was a bit worried but later found the Kaspersky Anti-virus to be the culprit, uninstall that and Installed Avast Anti virus and Firefox and that made a huge difference.I also played a few Divx videos / MP3 files via Media Player and they played flawlessly, after the initial Vista boot up the laptop is pretty snappy for a 800 Mhz processor (BTW I found out the Intel processor A110 that this laptop / UMPC has as of date this is one of the fastest Ultra Mobile processor by Intel).

The laptop is pretty quite hardly makes any sound, though it gets a bit hot it has a small heat vent at the right side and warm air flows out via the same, will be playing with it a lot and expect a detailed hands on user review in the next 36 – 48 hrs, please post any questions you might have in the comments section.

This is a rebranded Kohjinsha SH8KP12A

HCL has now dropped the price to Rs.21499 for AXMY0210 with ubuntu linux

If you can buy from Kohjinsha Japan(retail stores),you will get a better model with DVD drive and 120GB HDD,Atom processor,GPS,1-seg TV-tuner(now works only in Japan) for a much cheaper price.

This model with A110 @ 800mhz has become outdated new ones come with Atom processor and GPS modules. The older models like these are available in Japan for Rs11000 to 14000/-

Kohjinsha has other models with optical drive also http://www.kohjinsha.com.sg/products.htm

I have a laptop simimalr to the HCL mileap but not the same. I really love how the screen can rotate around. I never knew how useful that could be. At first when I wanted to show people what I was working on I would start moving the whole laptop to remember the screen rotates.
