Hands On HCL Mileap Y Series tablet UMPC

22 February 2008 16 Comments

After repeated delays I finally got my Mileap V tablet UMPC in my hand after a long wait, the HCL guys weren’t just not ready to give it as they just had one piece with them, according to them I am the first retail customer in the city to lay hands on the Mileap V series, I took the Version loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium version Called the Mileap V the version loaded with Linux is technically known as Mileap Y.

My first impressions its surprisingly small and looks beautiful, the build quality that I was a bit worried about is great, my wife after seeing it for the first time was a bit pessimistic and said can you even work on this its so small, Surprisingly it runs Vista pretty comfortably but don’t expect it to fly or play games on the same, the boot times are a bit long upto a minute and a half but after that you can run applications simultaneously and it work pretty well for the size, it connected to my WiFi router without any issues.

Lets start with the Unboxing of the HCL Mileap Laptop!

HCL Mileap Y / V UMPC box package

It came in a handy box as shown above, first impressions the box is light weight.

The HCL Mileap Y comes preloaded with Linux the hardware is the same as Mileap V, if you are comfortable with Linux or have the know how to install Windows Operating system you can go with Mileap Y.

This is a rebranded Kohjinsha SH8KP12A

HCL has now dropped the price to Rs.21499 for AXMY0210 with ubuntu linux

If you can buy from Kohjinsha Japan(retail stores),you will get a better model with DVD drive and 120GB HDD,Atom processor,GPS,1-seg TV-tuner(now works only in Japan) for a much cheaper price.

This model with A110 @ 800mhz has become outdated new ones come with Atom processor and GPS modules. The older models like these are available in Japan for Rs11000 to 14000/-

Kohjinsha has other models with optical drive also http://www.kohjinsha.com.sg/products.htm

I have a laptop simimalr to the HCL mileap but not the same. I really love how the screen can rotate around. I never knew how useful that could be. At first when I wanted to show people what I was working on I would start moving the whole laptop to remember the screen rotates.
