Video games censorship coming soon to India

3 January 2008 One Comment

Well it seems the censorship board of India and the I&B ministry is planning to add it’s clutches to the Video Gaming Industry…… Well this so called gaming industry is already in an nascent stage in India, we already don’t get many game titles in India because many popular publishers just don’t want to come to India coz they say we don’t have numbers. I just don’t know how this new move of silly censorship will this help this industry. My argument is that almost all the games are already rated by ESRB internationally since 1994 a non-profit organization and now they would have to be again re-rated by censorship board in India!

The draft bill being considered by the ministry also proposes that the Censor Board do this job and certify an age-limit for kids accessing particular video games. The Censor Board might also reserve the right to reject a video game if it is ‘unsuitable’ for an Indian audience.

“This is true that there is a proposal that the Censor Board should start censoring all video games – and I agree with proposal totally,” says Sharmila Tagore, the chairperson of the Censor Board. “We have already submitted our proposal to the ministry and the draft is being considered by them,” she added.

This would be an very interesting story to follow and I will follow up this story.

    Hi Ranjit
I really appreciate your quick response and am grateful for the same. You have cleared all my doubts, but only one doubt more that cropped up from your response to my questions :) I just wanna ask that isn’t it illegal to be a member of US/ european PSN if you don’t live in that country? Coz i have psp 3000 model and i wanted to sign up for PSN network, but in terms and conditions it is mentioned that you can’t be a member unless you are residing in that region!
    Doubtful Gagan :D
