Socom Confrontation Review, Hate to love it

31 October 2008 4 Comments

Socom Confrontation is the latest game a online tactical shooter exclusive for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) gaming console, this is strictly a online mutliplayer game thus has no single player campaign or a split screen mode, though the game has not yet launched in India but I was waiting for it to launch for such a long time that I got it via the US Playstation Network (PSN) about 2 weeks back and my views regarding the same.

A brief history, The Socom series is a highly anticipated on the PlayStation, in short it’s the counter-strike game for PlayStation as many I was also waiting for quite some time for the launch of Socom Confrontation the first next generation Socom Series in high-definition on the PS3.

First the bad part this game should not have been launched this earlier it’s like a beta product, slant 6 the developers are working behind the scenes to patch the game but still there are still a lot of bugs and many features just dont work or are disabled and it will even crash your PS3 every couple of hrs,  I just don’t know how did Sony’s Quality Control could have approve the launch of this half-baked game. The good news is slant six is working on the fixes and they are showing up just yesterday a new patch 1.2 has gone live and the game is a bit better now I could play about 4 hrs straight without a crash, still a long way to go from being perfect.

The Graphics are sharp and overall it looks good.

The good part, great game play!

Now if you can forget the server side issues and get on a decent server (it will take a couple of hops for you to get a decent server) the game play is awesome its plays beautifully

as a tactical shooter  I have to say one of the best shooters that I have played till date on the consoles apart from GRAW, the graphics which run native at 720p also are very good and adds to the touch of realism (the graphics are as good as Assassin Creed if I may compare), there are just 7 maps in the game (which includes some classic maps) but they are really huge and also they have the day-night cycle so no worries on that front, they are some graphic glitches but nothing much to bother about, the game play is so intense and you get so drawn into the same that you will not worry about the server issues that you might have encounters before joining the game,  this game would be a must have for  any one who likes realistic shooters, the guns sounds realistic and you can also customize your guns with scopes / laser etc you have support for BT headsets and you would find 70% of the players use there headsets to communicate which again is nice to see on the PSN.

Planning to purchase this game?

Make sure you have a good broadband connection if you want to enjoy this game otherwise you would not be even able to logon to the SOCOM servers, and mind you there is nothing you can do without loggin on to the Socom servers. The standalone game costs US $39.9 and you can get the disk version or download via PSN the size of the game if you download via PSN its 2.8 GB for the game and another 500 MB or so for the patch, also make sure if you are planning to use a BT headset make sure your headset has a nose-cancellation feature, also there is a bundle with this game which has the new Sony BT headset with the game for $59.9 and if you don’t have an BT headset its a great deal coz the Sony BT headset costs $50.

Rating this Game?

Well I have a mixed feeling regarding this game and I hate to love this game, even with it’s server problems I play this a couple of hrs every day that’s how good and satisfying the gameplay is.

Regarding rating this game, I would rate it into two parts, firstly how I would rate the game as it is now and secondly my rating as I expect the server and the other irritating issues would be fixed very soon via patches and I believe this game becomes as good as Warhwak.

Currently I would rate this game as  6 /10

I expect this game should get a rating of 9 /10  after a few patches (I will update this story after a month again to see how SOCOM finally fares)

gr8 review , i tried it too , socom has its own amount of network problems that stops it from being such an amazing game . the previous iterations of socom on ps2 were gr8 , this is a rushed product in my opinion , sony should ve not released an incomplete product , even after patching it thrice , things dont work well for socom confrontation .

lets hope that sony fix these issues asap & deliver a smooth online experience & if this current state of psn problems currently with games like warhawk ,lbp & socom confrontation doesnt gets fixed in time , sony could face a real hard time when R2 is unleashed . sony better fix thier online service

I dont agree.. socom looks great… until you start playing.. the guys moves all stiff and you can barely shoot anyone. reminds me of the mortall kombat type characters… all stiff and hard to move. cod4 blows this game away the graphics, the levels, the detail.. socom is off.

The only ppl who like this game are ppl that are addicted to the socom series. ANYBODY that has played other shooter game will agree with me that this game is garbage.

It is a ONLINE ONLY game, well… you think they’d be able to perfect the online play. There is no party setup to join with your friends, and by the time your friends get to a game with you is already full. Ranked games are no respawn, you spend more time watching than playing. The graphics are equivalent to nintendo64, and the ranking system allows nothing to you. It simply is a huge disspointment.
